Products and packaging specs

A packaging spec describes one packaging design. Many SKUs can share it.

Specs, families and SKUs

A spec is shared across SKUs, so a box used by fifty products is measured once. Families group variants of a spec, such as the same carton in three sizes.

Levels and components

  • Levels: primary, secondary, tertiary or transit, and e-commerce shipping.
  • A component is one packaging part. A multi-material laminate records grams per layer.
  • Attributes per component: material and sub-material, colour or opacity, post-consumer recycled (PCR) percentage, recyclability status per jurisdiction, compostability certification, reusability, PFAS-free declaration, labels and markings, and units per SKU.

How jurisdictions use the spec

Category mapping is driven by each jurisdiction's own data rather than fixed yes or no columns, so a component can land in different categories in different places. Where the attributes conflict, the labelling check flags it.
